Reported on Xinhuanet (2007-04-03): ETS cancels plans to revise GRE General TestEducational Testing Service (ETS) announced its decision on Monday to cancel plans to launch the revised Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) General Test, since the problems they generate outweighed the benefits of moving to the new format immediately.

The decision was made in consultation with the Executive Committee of the GRE Board, said the world’s largest private education testing and measurement organization in a news release obtained by Xinhua.

“The decision to cancel the revised GRE General Test best serves the interests of test takers and the graduate institutions that use those scores to make admissions decisions,” says David Payne, Executive Director of the GRE Program at ETS.

“After much debate and evaluation, it became clear that the current format offers students more convenient and flexible opportunities to test when and where they choose, while still providing score users with valid predictors of test takers’ preparedness for graduate school study,” he added.

ETS had originally planned to launch the revised GRE General Test worldwide in September, replacing combined computer-based and paper-based administration by the new Internet-based test.

The organization said registration for the current GRE will continue as normal, and registrations in India, China and Japan, which had been closed, will be reopened in the near future to accommodate application deadlines.

In Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Republic of Korea, the Analytical Writing section will continue to be computer-based, while the Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning sections will be offered at separate paper-based administrations, ETS said.

Founded in 1947, ETS develops, administers and scores more than30 million tests annually in more than 180 countries, at over 9,000 locations worldwide. It provides a comprehensive suite of English language tests, such as TOEFL, TOEIC, SAT and GRE.
